What WOULD Bekki Eat?

Well, I'll start with what I wouldn't eat. I wouldn't eat margarine. Or tofu. Or lowered-fat anything. Olestra is right out. Hydrolyzed, isolated, evaporated, enriched, or chocolate flavored "phood" won't pass these lips.
What will I eat? Real food. Made-at-home food. Food that my great-great-grandmother could have made, if she had the money and the time. And if she hadn't been so busy trick-riding in a most unladylike way.

I. Can't. Eat. Butter.

My long-time readers may need to sit down for this. You all situated? Comfy? Ok...

I have been butter-free for two weeks.

Jack (9 months old) is feeling better.

I no longer feel that familiar brain-fog/exhaustion after breakfast. (Seems *I* only react to breakfast butter... other-times-of-day butter don't make me feel like someone slipped me cheese.) But Baby Jack seems gets Green Acid Poo Of Doom from any-time-of-day butter.

In Food Allergy World, these items of note combine to create a diagnosis of You Can't Eat Butter Anymore.

I have very strong feelings about this. I worship at the altar of Mother Butter and Father Bacon. Now my goddess is dead (blasphemy!) I worry because now I'm using more coconut oil than I was before... still have to get my fats, you know... and I'm allergic to coconut protein. Perchance the coconut oil is more pure than the butter? Still no idea whether ghee is ok... haven't acquired a taste for it, so I haven't used it enough to know. I'll get on that eventually.

Eggs were back on my menu and then gone again. I find myself needing to google "vegan" recipes. I swear to add meat to every single one of them!

In other news, I swear I'll be revamping this poor redheaded step-child of a blog. Soon. My version of "soon" means, well, hopefully before the end of 2010, but don't put money on it. I see that I have a whopping 9 faithful followers, so I'm excited to make this thing pretty and easier to use. I envision a fancy bloggiful launch, complete with merchandise.

I miss you, Butter. But I know you shall not remain dead to me forever. I still swear undying loyalty, and my lips shall touch not the cursed margarine! (Because, really, what could they possibly make it out of that I'm not allergic to?!)

Hi - from faithfull follower #8 (I think). I'm sure I found your blog searching for allergen free meals. My dd is just 12 mos now and I have been beef/pork/grain/dairy/soy-free for 9 mos now. I am currently on the GAPS diet to heal her gut in hopes of once again eating cheese and butter! lol Thanks for the update!

I wasn't a proper 'follower' before but I am now. Because you deserve to feel the love. :)
No butter though *shudder* that IS a hard one.
Can you eat lard? It won't do on toast, but as you're GF I don't suppose that's very relevant anyway. And it does work pretty well in place of butter in a number of things.
That sucks about the coconut oil...I wonder if swapping extra virgin for the 'lite' (second pressing) might make a difference in what you can tolerate there? It makes a huge difference in the strength of the taste. And of course I'm sure you know that not all brands of CO are created equal...betcha some are more pure than others too.

Maria, I am planning to start the GAPS diet in January. I've been planning and thinking and preparing and stalling since this last February or March. Mommy Bee, thank you for being official! LOL I may actually have to blog more often... I can still tolerate coconut oil. I think. Haven't given it up long enough to know, because I don't want to know if the answer is "no." I get mine from Tropical Traditions, so it's the good stuff. I haven't acquired a taste for lard, oddly. I love me some fat, but lard smells weird. I need to learn to render my own tallow, and keep a steady supply of beef marrow for my gluten-free toast.

Maria, I'm having incredible technical difficulties with Blogger and Google, and it looks like your reply has been rejected. If you'd like, please try again. :-)
My son is too young for me to do the intro, too. But since he'll be eating any minute now, I want him to start out with GAPS-ish food, so that means I should be eating GAPS-ish food.

Yikes. No butter. Huh. Now that you've got me addicted to the butter-n-bacon flavored ... everything ... I don't know what I would do in your situation. You're such a trooper.

So you can't drink whole milk or use cream, either?

Kelly, no I can't drink milk or use cream. I tried to convince myself that I *could* handle cream... I thought since it probably only had trace amounts of milk protein, it'd be fine. Same with the butter. Unfortunately, I was wrong. I'm hoping to get butter back once I heal my gut, because I really don't like ghee.

About Me

Tejas, United States
I am many things... all at the same time. (No wonder I don't get much done!) I am a wife to a retired infantryman, mother of 3, stocker (and stalker) of the fridge, passionate fan of food, nutrition, ecology, coffee, wine, and college football. I love all things witchy and piratey. I often cook with booze. I feed stray cats. I don't believe in sunscreen. I don't like shoes and really hate socks. And I currently can't eat any gluten, dairy, eggs, soy, coconut(!?), or sodium metabisulfite (aw, shucks, no chemical snackies.) Sometimes even citric acid gets me. But only sometimes.
